Chinese 5 Spice - Salt Free - Quick Reference

What is it?: A salt-free Chinese-inspired spice blend built around cinnamon, cloves, fennel, star anise and nutmeg.

Flavour: Warm, sweet and aromatic, with clear liquorice notes from fennel and star anise and a deeper clove finish.

Common uses: Use in stir-fries, roasted meats, duck, pork, noodles, marinades, glazes and slow-cooked dishes.

Pairs well with: Pairs well with soy sauce, ginger, garlic, sesame, orange, honey, pork and duck.

How to use: Add sparingly near the start of cooking so the spices can bloom in oil or sauce. Increase gradually, as the anise and clove notes are powerful.

Compare with: Unlike many commercial blends, this version contains no added salt, allowing seasoning to be controlled separately.

Substitute: Where unavailable, combine cinnamon, star anise, fennel, cloves and a small amount of nutmeg.
