Description

The classic Birdseye fresh and Piri Piri or Peli Peli or Pili Pili is another mighty chilli for its flavour alone but a true legend in how we have so many chilli in the world today

It is the Birdseye chilli the Portuguese took over to Africa from Latin America where it was greeted with delight and spread very quickly

The Portuguese also took the birdseye chilli to Burma where it again travelled through the Middle East and China, such a humble chilli the birdseye is a true legend in our choice of chilli today

Use in any dish for any occasion for the best of times!

The only difference between whole and powder is ease of use and texture within your dish, for quick use I use powder, for weekend cooking sessions its whole pods, always ensure to get your chilli powder from reputable sources

Birdseye Chilli Powder – Quick Reference

  • What is it? A fine powder made from dried Birdseye chillies, also associated with Piri Piri, Peli Peli and Pili Pili traditions.
  • Flavour A direct, lively chilli flavour with a clean aromatic heat.
  • Heat level Hot, with considerably more impact than mild Mexican chillies.
  • Origin Grown in Uganda; Birdseye chillies spread from Latin America through Africa and Asia.
  • Common uses Piri piri sauces, curries, stews, marinades, grilled meat, seafood and everyday dishes needing clean heat.
  • Pairs well with Garlic, lemon, ginger, coriander, cumin, tomato and grilled meats.
  • How to use Use a pinch at a time, stir well and taste before adding more.
  • Compare with Sharper and more immediate than Cayenne, with a distinctly African and piri piri association.
  • Possible substitute Cayenne for a slightly softer heat, or De Arbol for a Mexican-style alternative.
  • Storage Keep sealed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to protect colour, aroma and flavour.

Good to know: Birdseye is valued as much for its history and mobility across cuisines as for its strong, versatile heat.
