Ancient Mayan Hot Chocolate Recipe

Serves: 2
Preparation Time: 10 minutes

Ingredients:

500ml (2 cups) water or milk (traditional versions used water)
50g (2 oz) cacao paste or unsweetened cocoa powder
1-2 tsp chili powder (adjust to taste)
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tbsp honey or agave syrup (optional, for a touch of sweetness)
A pinch of sea salt

Method:

Heat the liquid: In a saucepan, heat the water or milk over medium heat until warm but not boiling.
Melt the cacao: Add the cacao paste or cocoa powder to the liquid and whisk until fully dissolved.
Spice it up: Stir in chili powder, cinnamon, vanilla, and a pinch of sea salt. Taste and adjust the chili to your preferred heat level.
Sweeten if desired: If you'd like a sweeter drink, add honey or agave syrup and whisk until combined.
Serve: Pour into mugs and serve warm. For an extra-authentic touch, froth the drink by whisking vigorously or using a traditional molinillo.
