At this time of year I still get a hankering for my Great Grandad’s last rhubarb harvest, grown in Preston and posted to my grandparents in Stafford. My Gran would make the finest rhubarb crumble — tart fruit with a sugared top that needed a jackhammer to break, followed by the softest crumble and lashings of homemade custard. A taste I miss to this day.
British Food Fortnight or what we used to call Harvest time is built on these memories and traditions. It’s our chance to celebrate local harvests and the dishes that have carried us from one season into the next. From crumbles and pies to roasts and soups, it’s about savouring food that is close to home, close to heart, and still every bit as comforting today.
