You may have seen in the news Spices being imported from India are now subjected to full pesticide tests before being allowed into the UK - EU
The extra measures have been triggered due to the use of ETO - Ethylene oxide is often used as a sterilizer in order to keep a curb on microbial load. It disrupts the reproductive processes of microorganisms, thus preventing food from getting spoiled
Two major manufactures MDH and Everest in India has been found to have 25% of the spices drenched in this chemical, not good for humans or nature
The desire to produce cheaper food, the need to produce more yields per harvest in a world of climate change affecting the yields will push some producers to use chemicals more and more
Thankfully the farmers - producers and exporters we deal with understand quality and the need for it, not just to say it. All our spices tested come back clean
However this is causing delays for deliveries to us and everyone as all exports are being tested in a limited number for test labs, due to shortages some of the large food manufacturers here are buying up stocks, the little fishes like us are having to wait
Quality always takes time, a price worth paying
Enjoy the latest, Steve and the Team
