I am not one for world days, the type that seem to celebrate the weirdest things, being in the food trade I get sent all sorts of info with one catching my eye this week, World Nutella Day
A firm favourite is the hazelnuts croissants, a sheer delight at the weekend when I do treat myself. A food not born from indulgence but from empty shelves, tight rations, and the quiet ingenuity of people making do with what was left.
In post-war across Europe, chocolate was scarce and costly. But in northern Italy, hazelnuts were still plentiful. They stepped in not as a luxury, but as a solution, stretching flavour and nourishment when little else was available. What began as a way to soften hardship slowly became something comforting, familiar, and eventually cherished.
Originally sold as a block that was sliced, in 1964 Ferrero changed the recipe to make a paste and we were given one of the best sweets to ever be created, after generations enjoying this flavour infused into all sorts, it has become a staple treat all over the world
