Spice Journeys Through History: Cinnamon

Cinnamon’s story begins in Sri Lanka, where it was harvested from the inner bark of the Cinnamomum tree. Ancient Egyptians valued it so highly they used it in embalming, while Roman nobles burned it at funerals to perfume the air. For centuries it was a spice worth more than gold.

Arab traders spun tales to protect their monopoly, claiming cinnamon was collected from giant bird nests perched on cliff faces. This mystery only added to its allure, fuelling Europe’s hunger for the spice and driving exploration across oceans.

By the Middle Ages, cinnamon was a fixture on the tables of the wealthy, woven into feasts, spiced wines, and celebratory cakes. It became a symbol of abundance, hospitality, and status — to serve it was to show you had power.

Today, cinnamon still marks seasonal change. From mulled wine and apple pie to Moroccan tagines and Indian curries, its warm, sweet depth continues to flavour autumn and winter. A spice with a thousand years of stories, still at home in our kitchens.
