The First Door: Aromas of Anticipation

As November folds into December, you can almost feel the shift. The cold sharpens, the days shorten, and suddenly the kitchen becomes the warmest place in the house. Long before Christmas as we know it, the peoples of Northern Europe marked this moment with fire, evergreen branches and the first spiced drinks of winter — small comforts to keep the darkness at bay.

When Christianity layered Advent onto the old rhythm, the season became one of preparation. Not just spiritual, but deeply practical: soaking fruit, drying peel, grinding spice. British puddings were stirred, Scandinavian gingerbread dough tucked away to mellow, and the first cinnamon- and clove-scented pots of gløgg gently warmed on the hearth.

This week carries that lovely sense of waiting. The knowledge that something good is coming, carried on the aroma of citrus, spice and promise. The first door opens, and winter suddenly feels a little kinder.
