Description

Species: Capsicum chinense

Origin: Caribbean – Netherlands Antilles

Heat : Habanaero Heat Level 5

Habanero Antillais Caribbean is a traditional Caribbean Habanero associated with the Dutch Caribbean islands, formerly known collectively as the Netherlands Antilles. This distinctive variety produces an abundance of beautiful, glossy red chillies with the intensely fruity aroma and rich tropical flavour for which the Habanero family is celebrated.

The fruits are rounded and slightly wrinkled, typically measuring approximately 3–4cm across, ripening from green through shades of orange before developing their brilliant red colour. Beneath their attractive appearance lies the characteristic Habanero combination of powerful heat and a wonderfully aromatic, fruity flavour that brings a distinctive Caribbean character to cooking.

The variety is particularly well suited to preparing traditional Caribbean hot sauces, salsas, marinades and spicy condiments. The ripe peppers can also be used in stews, slow-cooked dishes and homemade chilli sauces, while drying offers another way of preserving their rich flavour for use throughout the year.

Habanero Antillais Caribbean belongs to the Capsicum chinense species, a group with a long history of cultivation throughout tropical America and the Caribbean. Although the name Habanero means "from Havana", these chillies are particularly associated with Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula and the wider Caribbean region, where numerous locally adapted varieties have developed over generations.

Plants have a vigorous, bushy growth habit, typically reaching around 85cm in height under suitable conditions, although growth will vary according to climate and cultivation. Attractive white flowers give way to generous crops of rounded peppers, making this a productive and visually appealing addition to a greenhouse or sheltered growing space. Fruit maturity is generally quoted at around 100 days in favourable conditions, with cooler UK temperatures potentially extending the ripening period.

For successful cultivation, sow indoors from January to April at 22–28°C, allowing approximately 12–21 days for germination. Early sowings benefit from supplementary lighting, while a heated propagator helps maintain consistent temperatures. Grow in fertile, free-draining compost, keeping the plants evenly watered without allowing the roots to become waterlogged.

As with many Capsicum chinense varieties, Habanero Antillais Caribbean appreciates a long, warm growing season. A greenhouse or polytunnel is particularly beneficial in the UK, although container-grown plants can also thrive in a warm, sunny and sheltered position. Provide at least six hours of direct sunlight daily, preferably more, and avoid exposing plants to cold conditions.

Growing in containers allows plants to be moved indoors as autumn temperatures fall, helping remaining fruits reach maturity. Healthy plants may also be overwintered in a bright, frost-free position, ideally maintained above 15°C. Light pruning after harvesting and reduced watering during winter can encourage fresh growth the following spring.
