Description

Species: Capsicum annuum

Origin: Hungary

Heat: Level 1

Hegyes Eros is a traditional Hungarian chilli pepper, prized for its long, pointed fruits, juicy flesh and distinctive paprika flavour. A familiar sight in Hungarian markets and kitchens, this variety is particularly appreciated for its versatility, offering an enjoyable combination of fresh pepper flavour, gentle sweetness and lively heat.

The slender, tapered fruits typically reach approximately 12cm in length, developing from pale green to a rich red as they mature. Unlike many chillies that are harvested only when fully ripe, Hegyes Eros is traditionally enjoyed while still light green, when the peppers have a fresh, crisp character and a pleasantly pungent flavour. As the fruits ripen to red, their sweetness and characteristic paprika aroma become more pronounced.

One interesting characteristic of Hegyes Eros is the natural variation in pungency. Heat levels can differ between individual fruits and even within different sections of the same pepper, giving this traditional variety an occasionally unpredictable character.

In Hungarian cooking, the pale green peppers are frequently eaten raw in salads, stuffed and gently braised, or sliced into traditional dishes. Fully ripe red peppers are equally useful for cooking, roasting and preparing homemade sauces. Their relatively thin walls also make them suitable for drying and grinding into a richly flavoured Hungarian-style chilli powder.

Plants develop a vigorous, bushy and branching growth habit, generally reaching around 90cm in height under favourable conditions, although their final size will depend on climate and growing conditions. Attractive white flowers are followed by generous crops of elongated, pointed peppers. Fruit maturity is generally quoted at approximately 75–90 days under suitable conditions, although cooler UK temperatures may extend the growing season.

For successful cultivation, sow indoors from February to April at 22–28°C, allowing approximately 8–21 days for germination. A heated propagator helps maintain consistent temperatures during early growth. Grow in fertile, free-draining compost, watering regularly without allowing the roots to become waterlogged.

Hegyes Eros appreciates a warm, sunny and sheltered growing position with at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. Plants are suitable for greenhouse or polytunnel cultivation and can also be grown in sufficiently large containers outdoors during a favourable UK summer. Move plants outside only once the risk of frost has passed and temperatures are reliably warm.

Container-grown plants can be moved under cover as autumn temperatures fall, allowing remaining fruits additional time to ripen. Healthy plants may also be overwintered in a bright, frost-free position, ideally maintained above 15°C, with light pruning and reduced watering during the winter months.
