Hengdong is a distinctive Chinese chilli variety originating from Hunan Province, a region celebrated for its vibrant chilli-growing traditions and wonderfully flavourful cuisine. Unlike the familiar red varieties, Hengdong produces beautiful golden-yellow to orange chillies, bringing an unusual splash of colour to both the garden and the kitchen.

The slender, elongated fruits typically reach approximately 8cm in length and 2cm across, developing from green to a rich yellow-orange as they mature. Their attractive colouring and characteristic pepper flavour make them particularly suitable for preparing golden chilli sauces, spicy condiments and traditional Chinese dishes.

Hengdong has an interesting connection with the culinary history of its namesake region. Yellow chillies have been cultivated around Hengdong for generations, and local folklore tells of yellow peppers from the area being presented to China's imperial court during the Qing dynasty. According to the story, the emperor was so impressed that the peppers became known as Yellow Tribute Peppers, establishing a tradition that remains celebrated in Hunan today.

The chillies are traditionally used in cooking and preserving, particularly for preparing richly coloured yellow chilli sauces and dried seasonings. The mature fruits can be dried whole or ground into chilli flakes and powder, while fresh peppers bring lively heat and colour to stir-fries, sauces, marinades and other Chinese-inspired dishes.

Plants develop a bushy growth habit, typically reaching around 80cm in height under suitable conditions, although their final size will depend on climate and cultivation. Attractive white flowers are followed by crops of slender chillies, with fruit maturity generally quoted at approximately 80–90 days under favourable growing conditions.

For successful cultivation, sow indoors from February to April at 22–28°C, allowing approximately 6–20 days for germination. A heated propagator helps maintain consistent temperatures during early growth. Grow in fertile, free-draining compost, keeping the plants evenly watered without allowing the roots to become waterlogged.

Hengdong appreciates a warm, sunny and sheltered position with at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. Plants can be grown in a greenhouse or polytunnel, while container cultivation is also suitable for a warm UK summer. Move plants outdoors only after all risk of frost has passed and temperatures are reliably warm.

As autumn approaches, container-grown plants can be moved under cover to allow remaining fruits additional time to mature. Healthy plants may also be overwintered in a bright, frost-free environment, ideally maintained above 15°C, with reduced watering during the winter months.
