Description

Chilli Name: SANGRIA
Chilli Species: Capsicum annuum
Chilli Origin: Unknown (ornamental breeding)
Chilli Heat: Mild

Sangria is a colourful ornamental Capsicum annuum variety prized for its vibrant fruits that transition through multiple hues — typically from pale to orange, red and purple — creating a striking visual display in gardens and containers. Its primary appeal lies in its ornamental value, though the fruit are edible.

The pods are typically small, upright and slim, forming densely on compact plants that are well suited to containers, borders and hanging baskets. The fruits produce a long-lasting colour show throughout the growing season.

Flavour is generally light and fresh with a mild heat component. Reports from growers and ornamental pepper guides place Sangria’s heat in the Mild category (approximately 1 000–5 000 SHU), making it approachable for salads, garnishes and culinary use where a hint of warmth is desired without strong pungency.

Plants remain compact and bushy, typically under 60 cm tall, offering an aesthetic appeal that suits patios, window boxes and mixed plantings. While grown mainly for decoration, edible use as a mild pepper is acceptable where colour and presentation are priorities.

Sangria’s exact breeder and origin are not formally documented, and varieties sold may differ slightly in appearance depending on source. It is most widely categorised as an ornamental annuum developed for decorative appeal rather than specific culinary heritage.

Germination temperature 28–30 °C. See our Water and Feed Guides for advise.
