Shakira is a hot, Capsicum annuum chilli grown primarily for culinary use, particularly drying and processing. It is a traditional-style variety valued for dependable heat and suitability for flakes and powders rather than fresh eating alone.
Pods are elongated and tapered, typically 12–16 cm long, with smooth to lightly wrinkled skin. Fruits mature from green to deep red, developing thin to medium walls that dry efficiently while retaining colour and pungency.
Heat is assertive and clean, generally falling within the 30,000–70,000 SHU range, placing Shakira firmly in the Hot category. Flavour is robust and pepper-forward with low sweetness, making it well suited to savoury dishes, spice blends, and dried chilli products.
Plants grow upright and bushy, reaching medium height with good branching and reliable yields. Shakira performs well in warm outdoor positions and under protection, benefiting from full sun and consistent feeding throughout the season.
This variety is commonly associated with regional food traditions in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, where annuum chillies are dried whole or ground for everyday cooking. As an open-pollinated, non-F1 variety, Shakira can be seed-saved when isolated.
