The Sugar Rush × Fantasy is a modern hybrid Capsicum baccatum developed through the crossing of Sugar Rush Peach with Aji Fantasy. It was bred to combine the sweetness and productivity of Sugar Rush types with the milder heat and aromatic profile of Aji Fantasy. This variety is grown primarily for fresh use and speciality sauces.
Pods are elongated and slightly wrinkled, typically 6–9 cm in length, with thin to medium walls. They mature from green through pale yellow to peach or light orange tones, depending on phenotype. The pods are lightweight and hang freely from the plant, contributing to good airflow and even ripening.
Flavour is distinctly sweet and fruity with citrus notes, characteristic of baccatum varieties. Heat is generally in the medium range, commonly estimated between 10,000 and 30,000 SHU, making it approachable for regular culinary use. Heat tends to build gently rather than strike immediately.
Plants are vigorous and upright, often reaching 90–120 cm in height when grown in suitable conditions. They are high yielding, producing large numbers of pods over a long season. Best results are achieved in warm, bright conditions with consistent feeding and watering.
This cross originates from UK chilli breeding projects aimed at refining flavour-forward chillies with manageable heat levels. It reflects the increasing interest in artisan hybrids that prioritise taste as much as heat.
