Description

Chilli Name: SUMATRA
Chilli Species: Capsicum Frutescens
Chilli Origin: Indonesia (Sumatra)
Chilli Heat: Hot

Sumatra is a traditional chilli associated with the Indonesian island of Sumatra, where small, pungent chillies form part of everyday regional cooking. It is grown primarily for heat and reliability rather than size or ornamental value.

Pods are small, slender, and narrow, often produced upright on the plant. Fruits ripen from green to red when fully mature. Pod walls are thin, making them suitable for drying, crushing, and use in sauces or powders.

Flavour is sharp and direct with minimal sweetness, followed by a firm, lingering heat. Heat is classed as Hot, delivering clear pungency typical of small-fruited chillies from South-East Asia. No formally published Scoville Heat Unit figure is available for this variety.

Plants are compact to medium-sized and resilient, performing well in warm, humid conditions. They are productive once established and suitable for container growing, greenhouse cultivation, or sheltered outdoor positions.

Sumatra is best regarded as a regionally named Indonesian chilli type rather than a modern bred cultivar. Its value lies in culinary use, heat consistency, and adaptation to tropical growing conditions.

Germination temperature 28–30 °C. See our Water and Feed Guides for advise.

Chilli Seeds Qty is 5 per pack unless stated.
