Nordic Gløgg (Proper Scandinavian Mulled Drink)
This is the classic “first scent of winter” drink — cinnamony, clove-rich and deeply warming.
Ingredients
750ml red wine
200ml blackcurrant juice or a splash of port
5–6 whole cloves
2 cinnamon sticks
4 cardamom pods, lightly crushed
1 piece dried orange peel or fresh zest
50g sugar (adjust to taste)
Optional: handful of raisins + blanched almonds to serve
Method
Put everything except the wine in a small pan with 150ml water.
Warm gently for 10 minutes to extract the spices — don’t boil.
Add the wine and heat until just steaming, never bubbling.
Leave to sit for 10–15 minutes for deeper spice.
Strain, serve warm with a few raisins and almonds in each cup.
