Quick Reference

What is it?: A salt-free Middle Eastern baharat blend of paprika, coriander, cumin, cloves, black pepper, cinnamon, cardamom and nutmeg.

Flavour: Warm, aromatic and gently sweet, with paprika and cumin grounded by pepper and lifted by cinnamon, cardamom and nutmeg.

Common Uses: Grilled meat, kofta, seafood, roast vegetables, soups, rice and stews.

Pairs Well With: Lamb, beef, chicken, aubergine, tomato, chickpeas and rice.

How to Use: Use as a dry rub, fry into onions at the start of a stew, or stir through rice and roasted vegetables.

Compare With: Compared with Lebanese 7 Spice, Baharat is more paprika-cumin led; Lebanese 7 Spice uses black cumin and a stronger pepper-spice profile.

Substitute: Use Lebanese 7 Spice as the closest substitute, or Garam Masala for a warmer South Asian direction.

Storage: Store sealed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and steam.

Good to Know: Baharat means 'spices' in Arabic and recipes vary by region; this version is defined by the ingredients listed here.
