What is the Festival of Colours?

Every March, the city of Kanpur in northern India bursts back into colour for Ganga Mela, a joyful celebration that marks the closing chapter of the Holi season. Streets fill with music, laughter, and clouds of bright powder as neighbours gather once more before the colours of spring slowly settle back into everyday life.

The festival is rooted in local history and community spirit. Families walk together through the streets, sharing sweets, snacks, and spiced drinks while colourful processions move through the city. It is less about spectacle and more about people reconnecting — friends visiting homes, plates of food passed across doorways, and laughter echoing through old neighbourhood lanes.

Food carries the celebration. Sweet gujia pastries, fried savoury snacks, and milk-based treats scented with cardamom, fennel, and saffron are shared generously. The spices that warm these dishes are the same ones that have travelled through Indian kitchens for centuries, linking festivals, families, and everyday meals.
