Cascabel is another hidden gem in the Mexican Chilli World

Cascabel is known as the rattle chilli, the inside is hollow and when dried the cascabel becomes a rattle, traditionally given to babies to play with

The cascabel skin is very thin and very tough so requires a good long soak to soften up, I advise the chilli is broken up before soaking, chopped into small flakes helps

The dye from such a thin walled chilli is amazing, full deep colour

Warmer than some other mexican chilli at 5000 SHU

Cascabel is sweet nutty in flavour, quite delicate and can hide behind other flavours so its use is to be considered to get the wonderful flavour to come through

Each Pod weighs approx 3-5g

This was needed for a chilli con carne recipe and knew I wouldn’t be able to find in a supermarket. Speedily delivery. Will not hesitate to order again in the future.

    What a wonderful discovery

Posted by Irfan on 23rd Jan 2023

All the chillies on Spices on the Web are a wonderful discovery. In Indian cuisine chillies are just chillies, there's no further distinction. SotW presents the marvellous world of Latin American chillies, where there's so much amazing variety. These cascabel chillies are a prime example. So much flavour, with a light kick of heat. I love it, and I am slowly working through the others.

    Good Nora substitute

Posted by Joe on 4th Aug 2022

Earthy flavour that’s good in sauces. I use it as a Nora substitute in Spanish dishes such as romesco sauce. Great.

Excellent Products, fast delivery and good prices. Maybe the delivery cost abroad is on the pricier side.
